Plastic and reconstructive surgery an integral part of the profession.

Specialisation

Dr Alexander has an interest in plastic surgery and body contouring. Plastic surgery falls into two main categories: reconstructive and aesthetic. In the former case, it’s generally carried out to restore bodily function and appearance following an illness or accident. The latter, meanwhile, is frequently termed ‘cosmetic’ surgery and is undertaken by choice to improve the individual’s appearance.

Body contouring includes procedures such as high-definition liposuction. Compared to traditional liposuction, this new advance uses a more intensive sculpting technique, resulting in a toned appearance with more clearly defined musculature.

Interests

Dr Adam Alexander

Dr Alexander is a long-time practitioner of the martial art taekwondo. The practice is based on strikes: participants learn punching techniques but the focus is on kicking. When learning taekwondo, students study basic methods, self-defence techniques and traditional combat moves. Combat is the best-known form of the practice and it has been an Olympic sport since 2000. It takes a high level of commitment and discipline to succeed in this sport. After winning a Taekwondo Championship title, Dr Alexander made the decision to focus on surgery and he retired from the sport. He still practices taekwondo in his spare time.

Dr Alexander is also a keen pianist and can play to diploma level. His favourite composers are Rachmaninoff and Chopin. Dr Alexander advises that those wishing to learn the instrument must incorporate daily practice  into their routine. One must practice at least 20 minutes daily to begin with. It is also important to warm up properly before practicing so that mistakes aren’t caused by stiff fingers. Warming up the hands and fingers helps play to be fluid. Dr Alexander uses warm up techniques before operating and his success rates are high. When learning a new piece, it is advisable to break up the arrangement into manageable sections – this could be a single measure or one page – rather than trying to master it all at once. Setting a practice goal and sticking to it is the best way to achieve success.
